Dear Pat,
Hi.
You very well could be a distant relative of mine. My G/G/G/G was Matilda McCabe from Cavan. I have no idea who my relatives are back in Ireland.
I know this by the marriage record of her daughter, my G/G/G Grandmother, Elizabeth Smith or Smyth, also born in Cavan. The imigrated to Canada abt. 1830.
I am the person who posted about the MacCaba or MacCabe.
Our family were called 'The Gallowglass'. Our family were hired by the O'Reilly's as mercenarie soldiers. They were fierce warriors. My Gen#4 gran married John Smyth and I've also heard that the Smyth o Smith were blacksmith and/or armorial craftsmen for the MacLeods also. . They were Scottish from the Scoittsh Hebrides. I've seen were they were from Galloway and were and are a Sept of the Clan MacLeod of Lewis.
Would love to find my cousins in Cavan. It is very well documented that the MacCabes, which you are right was spelled MacCaba and also MacChapa. I've had no luck online looking for information in Scotland almost like they are a lost Clan.
The Duald MacFirbisbook shows that our family was not just a Sept but actually blood related to the Clan MacLeod of Lewis.
Below is my online family tree. I have no other info on my McCabes other than my Gen#4 gran from Cavan.
If any of this sound familiar would appreciate any help!
Thanks Maureen in MD
