Mary Jane,my thoughts would be that your family were probably from the north of Ireland and therefore Scots/irish,McDermott is irish,there may well be McDermotts also in Scotland as there was a great deal of interaction between both countries,Alastarir McLeod the very knowledgable historian from Inverness Library said that he believed the Scot MacDearmids originated from the Irish McDermotts or that one of the original Campbells was named Dermid campbell and his son was then Mac or son of Dermid and so forth,I do have a couple of John MacDearmids from Skye in our family but I would advise that you look at the probability your family came from North Ireland.
