Ray, thank you for the reply. I do appreciate the clarification. I did know that my McDermott great grandfather was born in Ireland. Where my confusion comes in is that the families--Campbells, McLeans and Gillis-- that raised my grandfather and great aunt after their parents death were all from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. I have always wanted to know what prompted them to take these two orphans in. They didn't adopt them but were apparently very good to them. My mother had very fond memories of her grandmother Campbell. As I stated, I looked for a blood connection but did not find one. I thought there might be another connection besides "they were friends of the family." The connection between the MacDearmids and the Campbells in the Isle of Skye just seemed like another possible explanation. I do know that the Clan MacDermott webpage lists this and other similar spellings as variations of the MacDermott name. Any way thanks again. I appreciate the input. Best wishes also, Mary Jane Pattillo
