Hello Dianne, that was some interesting history about the MacDermid's, I have no doubt that there is likely a relationship somewhere back along the lines. My great- grandfather Malcolm was an ambitious farmer also, no one knows for sure how he got the money to buy the farm in Middle River,Cape Breton. Up until I was about ten years old my mothers uncle Dan MacDermid kept it going.
But then he got too old,and having no children of his own,he sold it my uncle, who sold it again. Too bad!
There were many MacDermid's in Cape Breton especially the Mira River area(not near where my MacDermid ancestors settled).
In the book "From the farthest Hebrides"
as told by John MacDonald to Ronald Ferguson.
Mr.MacDonald related that one Gillesbuig MacDiarmid came to the Hebrides as part of the dowry of O'Cahan's daughter in 1306, he was one of 120 Irish Gentlemen who were part of the dowry. As O'Cahan's daughter was to be married to MacDonald Lord of the Isles.
The name Gillesbuig was for whatever reason Anglicized to Archibald.
And Archibald was a common name among most of the MacDermid's from Harris to Argyll. My mothers uncle Dan was Donald Archibald, his fathers uncle's name was Archibald. Whether or not I'm descended from this Irish Gentlemen I may never know.
but it is interesting never the less,
and you are correct that the name MacDermid is definitly Irish in it's origins.
One more interesting note is that the Clan Campbell is known as the Clan Diarmid, another family where the name Archibald is quite prominent.
