Hi Charlene December 2nd 2011
I hope this finds you in good health and that the “?” of your computer is now working:
I have spent the last couple of days addressing your [Genealogy.Com] note dated: November 01, 2011, with particular reference to “Edward Saint George Machin”, and going over older files gleaning out additional data and clues.
I’ve put together a list based on a number of maps of London that I marked upwith the locations of the: churches, parishes, boroughs, & neighbourhoods of these [my] Machin families that [we’ve] been studying. The Tower of London [on the North side bank of the Thames] is, smack bang, in the middle and I use this location as a centre point.
OK: So all of the Birth, Christening, & Marriage Event’s falls within a radius of 1.0 to 2.5 kilometres [or ½ to 2 miles] from The Tower of London.
To the East, Spitalfields & adjacent Stepney: Edward abt1765 & Mary 1767 get together in what now is London’s Eastend, it’s interesting to read up on the development of these parishes as it paints a picture of what could have been. I have read that the Machin name was from the French “de Meschine”. Spitalfields' has a historic association with the French Protestant (Huguenots) refugees who settled in this area after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. It is suggested that 13,050 French refugees were settled in London, primarily around Spitalfields. Are we descendants of the French?
[Working for the French company Air Liquide for 40 years, I have developed a great affinity with the country].
Edward 1794 & Maria abt1795, were married in Spitalfields and moved to Southwark, in the earlier days Edwards occupation is listed as “Fish Monger”.
To the South, Southwark: Southwark’s St Saviour was a civil parish in the metropolitan area of London, England, and part of the ancient Borough of Southwark. It was created in 1541 from the former area of the parishes of St Margaret and St Mary Magdalene. In 1855 it was grouped with Southwark Christchurch into the St Saviour's District of the Metropolis. It became part of the County of London in 1889.
The parish contained the large wholesale food market “Borough Market”. Just the location for a“Fish Monger” to earn his keep.
Conclusion: I am now quiet happy to conclude that my Machin family include all those as detailed above, and it is not until this point that I had clearly established that Edward [b-abt1765] & Mary were the parents of Edward [Saint George] b1794…
I am in great debt of the clues you have provided, I thank you.
Cheers for now: Peter Patten
