MCINTYRE, James Francis (1886-1979)

Birth. June 25, 1886, New York, N.Y., United States.

Education. Cathedral College, New York; Saint Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie, Yonkers, N.Y.

Priesthood. Ordained, May 21, 1921, New York. Pastoral work in archdiocese of New York, 1921-1923. Vice-chancellor of archdiocese of New York, 1923-1934; chancellor, 1934-1944. Privy chamberlian, December 27, 1934. Domestic prelate, November 12, 1936.

Episcopate. Elected titular bishop of Cirene and appointed auxiliary of New York, November 16, 1944. Consecrated, January 8, 1945, New York, by Francis Joseph Spellman, archbishop of New York. Vicar general of archdiocese of New York, January 27, 1945. Promoted to titular archbishop of Palto and appointed coadjutor of New York, July 20, l946. Transferred to metropolitan see of Los Angeles, Cal., February 7, 1948.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest, January 12, 1953; received red hat and title of S. Anastasia, January 15, 1953. Papal legate to National Marian Congress, Lagos, Nigeria, December 8, 1954. Participated in conclave of 1958. Papal legate to Patrician Year, Armagh, Ireland, March 17, 1960. Attended II Vatican Council, 1962-1965. Participated in conclave of 1963. Resigned pastoral government of archdiocese, January 21, 1970. Lost right to participate in conclave by being older than eighty years, January 1, 1971.

Death. July 16, 1979, Los Angeles. Buried, bihops' mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery, East Los Angeles.
