Mackay to McKay

I have been told by three different people in my family that our McKay name was changed from MacKay. I have traced some of my relatives back to Pictou Nova Scotia and can not find where this change over takes place, Im assuming now it must have happened before they arrived in Nova Scotia. Which would be before 1837. I have also been told that there is Irish in the family and so far cannot find that either. Does anyone else have this same dilema. Im finding this family very illusive and hard to trace. thx
