Mackeyes/Makyes spelling?

I have a gentleman, Stores Mackeyes, who lived in CT and NY. He married a woman named Rebecca Smith before 1815. Their daughter Diana was my great great great grandmother.

Just today, I made the connection that this Makyes or Mackeyes name might be Mackay.. mack-eye. The county website for this area I'm looking in has nothing about this family and I'm not sure where else to look till I can physically go to this town.

Does anyone have any info about Mackay families in New England? Stores seems unusual for a first name, perhaps it would stand out in census records.

thanks for any direction here. Im just a beginner.
