My wife's family also had a namechange. McKay to MacKay. Her gg grandfather changed the name when coming from Nova Scotia to Boston. Boston was not hiring Irish Immigrants and 'Mc' was associated with Irish. He kept 'Mac' to keep with his Scottish Ancestory.
