Archibald MacKAY, born in 1745 at Kildonan, was a tenant on the Borrobol Estate, Strath of Kildonan. He was a tenant crofter and married Margaret GUNN. Margaret died 11 February 1815 and is buried in the Kildoan Churchyard. Archibald and Margaret had three children born on the Barrolbol Estate. The eldest, Ann McKAY, married Hugh Sutherland. She died giving birth to Alexander SUTHERLAND in 1817. Hugh was reported to have been carrying baby Alexander on his shoulders on the beach at Helmsdale after the clearances from Kildonan. He also died young, leaving baby Alexander to be raised by Ann's siblings, Donald and Janet. Donald and Janet also lived on the Borrobol Estate, Strath of Kildonan, Scotland until the the Highland clearances. Donald became a tenant at Gartymore, near Helmsdale on the coast of Scotland. He and Janet raised young Alexander Sutherland. Both are buried in the Helmsdale Cemetary.
In 1842 Alexander married Elspeth Bruce, daughter of George Bruce and Mally McPherson. Alexander and Elspeth had 9 children - Ann, Hugh, Lucy, William, Mally, Betsy, Janet, Donald and Georgina. Alexander and Elspeth are both buried in the Kildonan Churchyard. I am hoping to hear from anyone having information about any of the above people
