McGee/McGehee/MacKay Surname DNA Matches

There has been a likely DNA match between two McGee lines that previously had no known relationship!

The initial 12 (out of 25) marker results for a participant in the McGee Surname DNA Project resulted in a close match (11/12) with a descendant of Eli McGehee in the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation database, http://smgf.org:8081/pubgen/site0.jsp . The line of this particular McGee Project participant has a history of using the McGhee, McGee, and McGehee surnames.

The full results of the 25 marker test are expected to be available later this week. It will be interesting to see if the 1 marker genetic distance holds up with the additional markers. This test result may lead the genealogical research along a specific path that might never have been found without DNA testing. The specific information regarding the possible connection with the Lincoln Co., TN McGehee line may lead to extending this McGhee line.

This test has also indicated that there is no relationship with the McGee line of Warren Co., TN; there is a genetic distance of seven between the two lines. For a 12 marker test, this indicates that the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) is likely several thousand years ago.

The results and a brief analysis are posted on the McGee Surname DNA Project website, http://www.mymcgee.com .

An additional 11/12 match with the MacKay surname was found in the SMGF database. The McGee surname is a sept of the Clan MacKay. If this match continues to hold under scrutiny of additional markers, it may prove the distant relationship between these lines.

The McGee DNA website also contains much interesting information about the origins of the McGee (and variants, Magee, McGhee, McGhie, McGehee, Megee, ...) surname both in Ireland and Scotland. There is information about the early McGee home in Balmaghie, Scotland and of Island Magee, Ireland. There are images of the arms and seals of M'Ghie of Balmaghie.

Please visit the website and if you are a male McGee, you are invited to join the McGee DNA project, or if not, then please encourage one of your male McGee kin to join.
