In Reply to: Capt John Mackay b1839 established Queensland city by David MacKay of 986

John Mackay I.S.O. B:26 March 1839. D:11 March 1914. Buried at Bulimba (Brisbane). Portmaster of Queensland 1902 - 1914.

On discovering the Pioneer River in 1859, John Mackay selected several runs suitable for grazing (later named Greenmount Station and Cape Palmerston).

In June 1861, John Mackay sold Greenmount Station to James Starr, a Uralla grazier, then drove 1400 head of cattle and 50 horses overland, arriving at Greenmount Station in January 1862.

After E.B. Cornish bought Greenmount in 1863 and Cape Palmerston in 1864, John Mackay took up a career at sea and commanded several trading vessels working in the Pacific Ocean. On 12 July 1883 he was appointed Harbour Master at Cooktown before being promoted to Harbour Master at Brisbane then to Portmaster for Queensland until his death.

John Mackay had a brother Rainey who lived at Uralla and a son called Rainey Hugh (31 Dec 1890 - 22 July 1964). John Mackay's daughter (name unknown) married Francis Armstrong who fell in action at Quinns Post, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915.

Captain John Mackay was a cousin of John William Mackay (20 Oct 1836 - 3 July 1911) who was my great grandfather.
