I am currently researching George Grant MacKay and I rather think that Dr James MacKay was a younger brother.
Parents were George MacKay a wine merchant and grocer in Inverness and Lillias Grant. In 1861 (Census returns) Lucretia,b. in America and her children James,(16), Lily G,(15) and George R(12) were residing with her father in law George in Inverness. All of the above children were born in America.
Towards the end of the 1860s George (Senior)'s finances appear to have suffered a pretty drastic set back and he died in 1869, with very little money indeed.
I have no real interest in the genealogical side of the MacKays save where it impinges on George Grant MacKay b.1826 in Inverness.
George Grant married twice his first wife by whom he had a son George Denny MacKay and his second Jessie Simson who was his first cousin. GG MacKay was a land speulator and invested in a number of estates in the Scottish Highlands. He went to Canada in 1888 and settled in Vancouver B.C. where he almost immediately became involved in land dealing both on his own behalf and that of Lord Aberdeen who was later to become Governor General of Canada. He died in 1893 in Vancouver BC. Have more information if it is of interest to you.
