Mary MacKinnon - Scotland to America
I am looking for my 3rd great grandmother Mary MacKinnon, who according to family legend was born aboard boat traveling from Scotland to America (NC?) sometime in the 1780's or 1790's and probably died sometime before 1850. Mary was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Robeson County (now Hoke Co.), North Carolina and still standing just outside the present town of Raeford. Gen. Sherman camped here in his war with the Carolinas. Mary MacKinnon's father is said to have been a "man of learning and influence in the Presbyterian Church" - likely at Bethel.
Mary MacKinnon married Angus MacLeod (b: abt 1777) who emigrated from Scotland in 1802 and settled Cumberland (now Hoke) County, North Carolina. Angus was a school teacher for some 40 years and according to a diary left by his son Daniel McLeod in the 1870's, "he (Angus) was far in advance of most of the Scotch people of his day in intelligence." Angus and his second son Daniel began attending Gaelic services sometime in the 1830's and 1840's at Spring Hill Baptist Church in the present town of Wagram in Scotland County and left the Presbyterian Church altogether - while the rest of the family (wife Mary and children), continued their Presbyterian affiliation and membership at Bethel.
Is there a list of members at Bethel Presbyterian Church and Spring Hill Baptist Church? Does anyone positively recognize this family?
Thanks,
Daniel MacLeod
