Dear Gary,
The only real, early, information that I have is the book,
History of Clan MacRae by Rev. Alexander MacRae B.A. and republished by the Clan MacRae Society in the United States. If you don't have the book, you might find a clue in it as it seems to cover all MacRaes up until at least the mid 19th century. Sorry that I cannot help further.
Do you belong to Clan MacRae in Scotland? There are some helpful people there, particularly Fiona MacRae, but I think she too would rely on the book, the family tree in Eilean Donan Castle and graveyards around the Highlands.
