Dear Melinda,

John P. McRae was the son of John B. McRae of Iredell Co., NC, by his wife Mary McRae. He was the brother of Alexander McRae of Salt Lake City, UT, a bishop in the LDS Church and a close associate of Joseph Smith. Of course, his other brothers and sisters moved with him to Tishomingo Co., MS. These included Kenneth McRae, Daniel McRae (who spent some time in Marengo Co., AL as well), Jane Harris (wife of Terrill Harris) and Matilda Lily McKay (m. Hugh McKay, eventually settled in Tennessee).

His paternal grandfather, I believe, was a Kenneth McRae who died in Scotland, when John B. McRae was just a child. His mother then remarried to another McRae, Daniel McRae (Long) and settled in Richmond Co., NC. His mother Mary McRae was the daughter of Duncan McRae, who appears to have been a Revolutionary War soldier in North Carolina. He lived for some time on Leith's Creek near the Robeson/Richmond Co., NC border, then moved to Anson Co., NC, where he died c. 1820. His widow and second wife (Margaret McQueen McRae) moved back to Leith's Creek and Shoe Heel after his death. Mary was probably a daughter by the first wife, whose identity remains unknown.

All are part of my upcoming book, KITH AND KIN IN CAROLINA, which I plan to publish privately in the fall. Right now, I am completing my editing and am searching for more photographs. Do you know if there are any photographs extant of your John McRae or one of his children? Any photos I use in the book will give due credit to their contributors. I already have photos of Bishop Alexander McRae and also one of a son of Kenneth McRae of Tishomingo County. You are welcome to write to me at <civilisation75@yahoo.com>.
