Obituary for Alexander Macrae (from a local newspaper 1928?)
"On Tuesday the 19th of July, the mortal remains of Alexander Macrae, Temperance Hotel, Applecross, were laid to rest in the ancient burial acre at Clachau. A native of this parish, Mr Macrae travelled extensively in his younger days, only to return to his native village, to become its greatly respected citizen and patriarch. Duine coir, amiable and of a generous disposition, even elderly folk remembered his kindness to themselves in their schooldays. His goodwill is beyond question and one is justified in saying that his alms have gone to the ends of the earth. He was a loyal adherent of the United Free Church, and for many years he was Congregational Treasurer. Funeral Services were conducted at the house and in the churchyard by Rev. Messers Macmillan, Edinburgh; Murray, Beauly; and Maclean, Applecross. The sympathy of the community and of a wide circle of friends is extended to Mrs Macrae, the widow, and to Miss Marion Macrae, the sister. Mr macrae was 91 years of age."

The Applecross Temperance Inn was apparently run by Alexander & Betsy Macrae perhaps up until Alexander died in 1928. (He was born in Applecross in 1837. I understand Betsy was born Elizabeth MacKenzie (born in Kishorn c. 1853). In the 1901 census they had with them a niece Hyme (aged 17) and nephew John (15). The Macraes were 'talked about fondly long after they passed away.' He was both postmaster & merchant and Congregational Treasurer of the United Free Church. . Hyme may have married to become Hyme Macbeth or Hyme Macbeath. I am especially interested that Betsy may have had a sister Mary who was to travel to New Zealand, and, with husband William Dawson (tailor of Rosshire) give birth to Marjory Bella Dawson who is GGrandmum to my wife.
Does anyone recognise this Applecross Inn Mackenzie/Macrae connection? . Especially I'd like to hear more of this Mackenzie family.
