I have managed with the help of this book to link in and go back to 1280 - I do however have to verify one crucial link and am sending for records - but the LDS site was of much help.
The book was also interesting in seeing where the macraes went to - as you mention the Black Isle I seem to remember seeing something on that in here.

I do know of a couple resources that might be helpful though.
