His real name was John Duncan Graham Macrae(never 'MacRae'). Anyone who knew him well called him 'John'; he used the Duncan for stage purposes because, apparently there was already an actor registered with Equity called John Macrae.

You can read about him in the bigraphy 'Wise enough to play the fool' by P Barlow, John Donald Publishers, Edinburgh, 1995.

His wife did indeed take his name on marriage, but I don't quite see how this will help your research since it is the Scott connection which you are pursuing.
