Vikie; Frank is in the Holland region of the Netherlands. He has an interest in the design of what is called the familie wappen in the German language. He has translated it to English as family weapon. The British would say heraldry, heraldic emblems, coats-of-arms, armorial bearings, etc., etc. Frank had found a design for the family MICRANDER. That name was invented by an early member of that family named Daniel KLEINMANN (short man) from Pomerania (now in Poland). Daniel MICRANDER appears in the records of Wittenberg University as having matriculated in 1587, the same year that Arnoldt LANGEMANN (long man) who also inventited his new name to become Arnoldus MACRANDER. Neither one of those two appear to have had an armorial design nor were they from families of distinciton in the 1580s. A descendent of the MICRANDER family was a Colonel of Infantry in 1686 who had been at one of the Hanseatic Leauge towns to repeal the Norwegian Army which planned to lay siege. After Colonel MICRANDER returned his regiment to Brandenburg, Prussia he was awarded high rank and given the right to armorial emblems. He became important in Prussian government positions. A son of his in later generations had no sons, so he adopted the husband of his daughter into the family MICRANDER. This adopted son then couold identify his armorial insignia as BERTHHOLDI-MICRANDER. This person eventually was appointed as Prussian ambassador to the Austrian court and was involved in peace negotiations. Frank Macrander had supposed that the MICRANDER and MACRANDER names were variations on the same family name. The research I have turned up do not indicate this. It is possible that Daniel Kleinmann and Arnold Langemann were acquainted as classmates and may have invented both their new names as a joke. It was a practice during the humanist movement in universities and other scholarly circles to translate German family names in Latin or Greek. MICRANDER and MACRANDER are both based on Greek words.
