Hello Peter,
You are correct.It was a common practice for people to use an alias based on their father's first name.Therefore, someone whose father was named Thomas (fill in whatever surname you want) might have called himself McComas (or some veriant) if he could not risk using his real surname.However, it would wrong to imply that all McComases today are from that particular family especially in the case as you cite where they returned to using their real surname when it was safe to do so.
