Claudia, I have met two families of Mades's in Germany - one catholic and one protestant. Neither family seems to speak to the other even though some live fairly close to each other. There is a family in Bacharach (Mades winery) and there is a restraunt in Bacharach that has a Mades family tree on display though I have not seen it since the restraunt was closed when I was there. This Mades family has traced their roots back to Italy. In the Berlin Archivder Koniglichen Bibliothek the name 'Maddes' is filed under the alphabetical listing, but 'Mades' is under the name for Matthaeus. Other names are also listed such as Mattes, Mathes and a group of similar sounding names. According to these records, the family Mades is an old patrician family from Saltura (Italy?) that flourished in the 15th century. Its members were for the most part considered to be in the upper class higher than merchants and local government officials. Contact me if you want to discuss more. Doug P.S. I have a sister named Claudia. Notify Administrator about this message?
