Hi Helen,

I’ve been researching Nancy Jarrell Madison for several years and found her to be an amazing woman in her own right, far more than just a notable man's wife and the former President’s sister-in-law. (James Madison died on William and Nancy’s second anniversary.)

I'm in the process of trying to verify the correct death date for her. The obituary says she died May 15, 1875, but her grave marker says she died May 11, 1875. When I get that and a few other details resolved, I’m planning a formal report on Nancy's full life.

In the meantime, a short summary of my research called "Overview: NANCY JARRELL MADISON (1789-1875)" is on my website at:

Two things regarding your post. First, William Madison did not have a middle name or use a middle initial, even though the erroneous names "William Taylor Madison" and “William T. Madison” have been all over the web for years. (A good example of web info where just because “everybody has it” doesn’t mean it’s right!) For full documentation see the Montpelier Foundation’s Madison Family genealogy by C. Thomas Chapman at:

And this is a small picky point, but since I'm a transcription “purist” I need to add that the original of the obituary you've posted says that Mrs. Nancy Madison "died at her home in Pleasant Township on the 15th" but does not add the county and state. An image of the original is available at:

I appreciate your interest in Nancy.
