Regarding your comment that Ambrose Madison in his Will provided for the developement of the land that he Willed to his daughters, several questions come to mind. The devises to Elizabeth and Frances in the Will included the 1000 acres patented in 1728 to Henry Madison and (Capt.) John Madison respectfully. But, Ambrose considered this land his land to Will away in 1732 when it would appear that it was owned by Henry Madison and (Capt.) John Madison at that time. Then in 1734, Henry Madison and (Capt.) John Madison deeded this land to Eliabeth Madison and Frances Madison respectfully. It seem that some type of "funny business" was going on where the title was being stated in a way that the family knew was not the actual ownership.
What do you mean when you say that Ambrose provided for the developement of this land in his Will?
What do you make of the devise that Ambrose Madison made in his Will to Frances Williams (200 acres) and Daniel Stoghill (150 acres). In the 1734 deed from Henry Madison to Elizabeth Madison and (Capt.) John Madison to Frances Madison there are future bequests of the same acreage made to the same individuals. How do you suspect that Frances Williams and Daniel Stoghill related to the Madison family?Do you believe that they had something to do with carrying for the 1000 acre land patents that ended up in the hands of Ambrose Madison's minor children?
You mention William Todd's lawsuit against Ambrose Madison and his father-in-law (James Taylor, Jr., I presume) for illegal surveying. Is there a detailed record of this lawsuit?Do you think that this William Todd is related to Isabella Minor Todd, wife of John Madison, Jr.?Perhaps he was a son of Isabella by her first marriage to Mr. Todd.Do you think that William Todd's lawsuit was on behalf of the public interest (himself and lots of people in his same position) or was it private because he was not receiving the quality of land that he felt he should be getting because of his relationship to the Madison family?
When do the personal property tax records begin for the counties that you are looking at?I thought they began in 1782.What are those counties?I thought that Virginia was under control of the South during the Civil War and that the Union soldiers destroyed some of the Courthouses in the process of defeating the South. You said that the destruction was by the "south."Please set me straight on this.
