Hi I am historian of the Maestas family I would suggest you look first in New Mexico then Colorado then Utah. The reason for this the name Maestas is not a common name and really is not technically a Spanish name it is Basque.

The name was originally spelled Maeztu the Spanish in recent times changed it to Maestas which is a Spanish pronunciation. Therefore it will not be located anywhere in Mexico as the Maestas family were sent to colonize New Mexico and the rest of New Spain. The Maestas family never colonized Mexico.

Another + in your favor is that the Maestas family did not move around very much. I would bet 100 to 1 your father was born in New Mexico. Particularly since your mother suggested Mexico. It is probably New Mexico .. my second guess would be Colorado as this was another state the brothers who colonized the U.S. in the 1500's-1600's went to again the families did not move around much. Their descendants over the centuries stayed I am fairly sure your father is a descendant.

We still have Spanish lands grants in our name if that tells you anything. So check vital records in New Mexico and Colorado also check out LDS website. I hope that helps! Best
