Julie,
I cant speak for other projects, because I'm only in a few. There is a McGinnis Project that has been active for a few years, (42 members) so I was hesitant about including them in my project, deeply feel it is very inportant to include them.
We just recently started this Ginn, Guin, Guinn, Guyn, Guynn, Gwin, Gwinn, Gwyn, Gwynn, and all variations to include LaGuin, LeGuin, McGuin-McGwynn, Oguin-Ogwynn, and SeGuin and all variations of those names. (2-mos. old, 24 members, and Growing)
We have a few females members in the project. Some are in the background because they are part of one of the linages, and you do not see them, due to the fact that they did not provide a Y-DNA sample for testing. Those same females have other projects (mtDNA Projects) that they are participating in.
We have some females that are Logged in under a Y-DNA sample provided by their brothers, father, Uncles, or male cousin, which has allowed them to collect and participate in projects.
There are minor ways to get around the red-tape, that is percieved by others. For example, "females" when orderings the "Male Only" kit you must put the name of the person whom is providing the sample (Male individual), you can provide two email addresses, (one yours & one his), since your paying for the kit, you will recieve a log-in & a password for future access. The provider of the sample will have to sign the release paperwork attached to the kit, before he returns the sample.
***** Now I do have people in my Project, that does not want some particular information know to others, therefore I will not discuss linage that others want to remain "Private".And I will not discuss specifics on current "Living" individuals, addressed, names, dates, ect... just like there is "Private info" on the "Living" in the genealogy community, those same rules apply here...
***** But we do have many individuals in the project that are active genealogist, and I can refer them you if you have any question that I feel they can answer. That is one of our purposes here is to strenghthen your genealogy database with documented DNA cased. But it is not a magic wand.DNA results are QUICK at "Disproving a linage", and "Skeptical at Proving" a linage.
As for your last Question.... No & Yes.This is a DNA Project.Pedigrees are tree structures developed for ancestry purposes"Family Tree DNA has developed software which allows participants to download their GEDCOM onto the site. The only way to see someones Pedigree, is (1) to provide a sample, (2) you might get fortunate to match someone that has downloaded their GEDCOM onto the site.BUT IT IS NOT GARENTEED... (3) stastics show that only 4% of DNA providers have downloaded a GEDCOM...
I hope I answered your question .....
respectfully,
