George Washington "G W" MAHAN - M. G. MAHAN
Looking for information on GW and his father MG. Don't know if father's initials are correct but that is what is on GW's death certificate.
G. W. Was born in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX, 20 Jun 1854. Family history / lore has MG being killed in Civil War along with a brother or two. Several Mahans did enlist in the Sherman & neighboring counties area. Some records show MG was born in Arkansas and married UNK who was born in TX. Others have both born in TX - I believe the first to be correct.
GW moved or was passing through New Mexico where he met my great-grandmother, Roann Daniel, b: Jackson Co., MO. They Married 23 Jan 1878 in Watrous, Mora, NM. They returned to Roann's home place that same year. Later, in 1882/83 they returned to NM for 6 or 7 years, then returned to MO for good. GW was a cattle drover or Santa Fe Trail guide according to same sources listed above. He may be related to the Mahan family that resided in Mora, Mora, NM. I don't have much information on them either. Surely they are related.
The first two census's have for him and his family are listed as GW Mahan, the third GW Mayhan and a forth as GW Mayhaan, go figure. Anyway the name ended-up with the "Y" permanently added. There were no Mayhans in or near Grayson county according to census reports until years later. There were plenty of Mahans.
Thanks,
Jim
