Don't know if this will help. In researching my family I found they were from Besancon, Franche-Comte, France (very near Geneva).
The original name was Maire. I researched records to the 16oo's at La Madeleine in Besancon.
My (Le) Maire--Jean-Baptiste-- came with the French troops during AM. Rev War.
