I believe we have a common ancestor. I am g g g grandson of Robert Makepeace b c 1796 Wellington Somerset. He was eldest son of John Mak & Sarah Hurley (eldest child of 10). He married in Jun 1821 to Honor (Hannah) Hooper. In Sept 1823 he emigrated to Australia arriving in Hobart with his brother John (b Jun 1806). In Jan 1825 his Wife Honor, son Henry (b Mar 1822) arrived in Hobart with his youngest sister Mary Ann (b Jun 1815).
I have John & Sarah Mak’s 5th child as Sarah Ann, which is your relative. Of the other children 3 died comparatively young in England. 2nd & 3rd were Sarah & Ann, who died in 1791 & 1816 (age = 17) respectively. 9th child was Margaret who died in 1827 (age = 15). The other 3 children I have as Henry (b 1801), Eliza (b 1808) & Louisa (b 1810), for which no death has been found in England. Did any of them come to Australia with Sarah Ann?
Robert & Honor had a further 8 children in Tasmania (VDL). John is best described as an “entrepreneur” in today’s terms. He variously gives his occupation as Innkeeper, Postmaster, Carpenter & Farmer. He ran 2 hotels in Hobart until he lost both Licences and moved up the coast to Swansea. He ran a hotel there as well (again losing his licence?) & then becoming Postmaster. He made a trip to Bendigo goldfields in 1852 (apparently with his 5 sons), but he returned to Tasmania with in the year, apparently with only 2 of his sons. Robert & Honor remained in the Swansea area for the remainder of their lives. Robert did not leave a will, so had apparently spent virtually all his money.
Robert’s brother John m Sarah Hoberman in Hobart Oct 1831. (Sarah was born in Ireland and was the daughter of 2 convicts). They had 2 daughters Louisa & Sarah Ann and moved to New Zealand in 1939. John unsuccessfully applies for a land grant in Russell (Bay of Islands) area. They are in this area during the Treaty of Waitangi (Maori wars when NZ became a separate colony.) John is estranged from his wife and later returns to Australia (Victoria) in 1860. He dies here in 1870.
Robert’s sister Mary Ann married several times, first to William Parker in Aug 1832 with whom she had 6 children. William died in 1845 (on board a ship on a visit to Melbourne). Mary Ann then married William Porter in Nov 1848 in Launceston. She had 4 children from this marriage. William died in 1859. Mary Ann then moves to Melbourne (East Brunswick) where she lies until her death in 1875.
My g g grandfather William Wellington Mak (b 1828), 4th child of Robert & Honor, married in Melbourne (Collingwood) in July 1854 and lived the rest of his life in Bendigo. (d 1906). The eldest son Henry & 7th child Robert according to family stories both died in Victoria, son Robert is supposed to have drowned in the Yarra. No evidence has been found to support this, unfortunately being only 2 years before the introduction of State BMD records in Victoria.
Son John married in 1857 at Swansea to Henrietta Barber. They had 3 sons with 2 surviving. They later moved Swan Hill Victoria. The youngest son was Charles Alexander (b 1837 in Swansea) and married widow Elizabeth Stephenson in 1867. He had 3 daughters & a son before leaving her and living with Elizabeth Filbee, with whom he apparently had a son. Charles ran a hotel in Swansea (not the same one his father ran) and after his death his (legal) wife Elizabeth took over the license.
Eldest daughter Jane Anne m Alfred Glover in 1845 and had 11 children, 2nd daughter Sarah Eliza, married twice, having 7 children with William Hepburn the 2nd husband. 3rd daughter Honor Anne m Bernard Garity in Feb 1856 and had 5 children.
The youngest daughter Susan m Edwin Allen but had no children.
