Your James William Mallet was the only child born to Abraham (also often spelled "Abram") Mallett and his first wife, Nancy Reynolds Hays. Nancy died on October 7, 1860, less than a year after giving birth to James. (Note: Many in the family spell Mallett with 2 "t"s, but you will find both spellings.) Abraham Mallett was the second child of Jonathan "Nash" Mallett and his wife Julian Walker. Abraham and Nancy and their son lived in Rock Island Co., IL in 1860. Two of Abraham's siblings, Isaac and Charlotte, were also living in the home. Abraham's parents, who would have been James's grandparents, died in the 1850s leaving several children, many under an age to be on their own. They managed to hang together through the Civil War and the chaotic years that followed, and many settled in Iowa. I am descended from Abraham's older sister, Mary Ann Mallett Kinnaman Ferguson and her second husband, Ransom Ferguson. I have quite a bit of information on this family if you are interested. Just let me know.
