I am researching an Austin Malia who was married to a Sarah Kane before 1830. THey had a daughter Mary E. Malia born 1830. SHe later married Michael Gorman and immigrated 1851 with their infant daughter to Cinncinati, OH. In 1862 the family settled in Morocco, Newton Co. Indiana.

In my search to try and trace them back in Irland I have found that the Malia family comes from the Clew Bay region of Co. Mayo. There are many Melia families from the Achill Isle which is at the North end of the bay.

According to the 1842 Index of the Griffith's Valuation it lists only 2 Malia families. This is good for you and me. One must be my Austin the other yours. I have 2 small children and have been unable to do an actual lookup of the Griffith's, but it is available at from the LDS at their centers. You could use the yellow pages to find one near you.

One other piece of information that may be useful. The Achill Isle is in the Diocese of Tuam. You can use the Griffith's to locate the actual village &/or parish, and them send for records from Ireland.

Good hunting,keep in touch,
Angela Gorman Steffke
