Athens - Mary Geneva Malone Thompson, 86, died Saturday,
January 29, 2011, at Park West Hospital in Knoxville, TN.
She was born April 6, 1924.
She was an extraordinary person - a virtuous woman and a
blessing to her family and to all who knew her. She was a
devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother
and a caring, thoughtful friend and neighbor.
She was a native and lifelong resident of the Mount Harmony
community and a member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church in
She loved Lane View Farms where she was born and the farm
that she and her husband operated - first as a dairy and
later raising beef cattle.
In 1945, she was the first female industrial engineering
student at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville; and,
in 1947, while still a student, she earned her pilot's
Mrs. Thompson taught mathematics at McMinn County High
School for 27 years. She was a gifted teacher who cared
deeply for her students.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Naomi Weeks and
Robert Dee Malone; her husband, Howell Wilson Thompson, on
June 2, 2007; a son, William Howell Thompson, on November
7, 1973; an infant sister, Martha Ann Malone, on August
14, 1922; and a brother, Maj. Robert Weeks Malone, on
September 11, 1998.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Susie Dee
Thompson and Edward Bruce Epperson, of Maryville, TN;
three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny Howell Thompson
and Victoria Vandgrift Thompson, of Mount Juliet, Dr. Dan
Henry Howell Thompson and Nancy McCall Thompson, of
Knoxville, TN, and Robert Howell Thompson and Lyn Williams
Thompson, of Niota; three granddaughters, Tia Kimberly
Thompson Goodwin and husband, Dr. Erik Goodwin, of Belden,
Miss., and Christina Victoria Thompson and Alyx McCall
Thompson, of Knoxville, TN; five grandsons, Eric Bradley
Epperson and wife Jennifer, of Stokesdale, NC, Andrew
Barrett Epperson, of Maryville, TN, Justin Howell Thompson
and Jonathan Lance Thompson, both of Mount Juliet, and
William Robert Thompson, of Niota; one great-grandson,
Greyson Hayes Goodwin, of Belden, Miss.; one sister and
brother-in-law, Sarah Louise Malone and Harold W. Emick,
of Olathe, CO; one brother-in-law, William Howard Thompson
and wife Bertha, of Watertown; two sisters-in-law, Dene
Thompson Bailey and Elizabeth Thompson, of Nashville, TN;
and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.,
today (Published: 02/01/2011), at Jerry Smith Funeral
Home, 1010 S. White St., Athens. No funeral will be held.
The body will be cremated, and the family will have a
private memorial service at a later date.
Mrs. Thompson left this message: If you wish to remember
me (in place of flowers or a memorial contribution), do a
good deed for someone who needs it, offer kind words to
others, visit someone who is sick or lonely, and tell your
family you love them.
