Herencia is the quarterly journal of the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico. Volume 14, Issue 4 July 2006 contains an article titled 'Aragon and Esquibel DNA Research Findings and the New Mexico DNA Project' by Damien Aragon and Jose Antonio Esquibel.

The New Mexico DNA Project being conducted through Family Tree DNA contains information on 218 males and 111 females. 'Table 7: Haplogroups from Results of the New Mexico DNA Project as of June 2006' details 12 haplogroups and the surnames of families that test under each group.

Manchego is thus far listed under haplogroup R1b only. This haplogroup is of Western European origin. Basque and Celtic people belong to this haplogroup and they were among the earliest settlers of Spain. 68% of moderd-day Spaniards share this origin.

Hopefully, other branches of Manchegos will be interested in joining the DNA project. It will advance our research in linking the many branches together.
