The Manners family in China

Can anyone help on this one? I have been contacted by Joyce Astwood, who remembers as a child in Shanghai being taken on board my grandfather Errol Manners's visiting ship by her uncle Charlie Manners. She tells me he was born in England. He was a soldier (regiment not known), occupied in training Indian and Chinese troops, and she says that he won the VC, although I have not yet been able to check this. He appears to have married twice. There are no details of his first marriage, but his second marriage was to Agnes Moran, c 1930 in Shanghai where he was then living. He was interned in Hong Kong during the Second World War, and died of malnutrition in the closing months of 1945: he is buried in Stanley. He appears to have known Errol Manners quite well, which makes me wonder if they were cousins. I am checking my uncle Rodney's papers to see if they shed any light on the relationship.

Also on the same subject, Errol Manners was a British Israelite ie he believed (passionately) that the British were the lost 13th Tribe of Israel, and as a result he was violently anti-Catholic - he would not attend my parents' wedding as my father was marrying a Catholic, although he regretted this stance (and said so to her) almost immediately. However, there is apparently a skeleton in the family cupboard: we have a tradition of an uncle or cousin of his who was a Jesuit priest (shock! horror! anathema!) in China. I am trying to trace this one via the Jesuit Order here in London, so far unsuccessfully, and again, any insight would be welcome. I look forward to hearing anything from any of you. Steffi, if you are reading this, can you shed light on it?
