J. Clarence Manix was born, 16 Mar 1888, son of Phillip A. and Margaret (Gillogly) Manix.Phillip was born, 1845, Hartford, CT, and came to Fort Shaw, Cascade County, MT, as a soldier in the 1860s. After being mustered out of the service, he went to Sun River country of MT, secured a contract for supplying beef for the soldiers at Fort Shaw, and founded the town of Augusta. He built the first general store there, branched out into other lines of business, invested in ranch property and handled stock.He died at Augusta, MT, in 1898.Margaret Gillogly Manix was born in Bangor, ME.
J. Clarence Manix grew up in Augusta and attended school there, and later entered the school at St. Peter's Mission, then took a commercial course at Gonzaga College at Spokane, WA.In Sep 1906, he returned to Augusta and spent two years ranching then entered the mercantile business of J.F. Kendrick and stayed there until 1912. In that year he and W.D. Vaughn took over this store, becoming leading merchants of Lewis and Clark County.
On 14 Nov 1912, Helena, MT, J. Clarence Manix married Miss Helen Nilan, daughter of J.M. and Margaret (Owens) Nilan of Helena.
Manix children: Walter James, b. 16 Feb 1914; Joseph, b. 9 Feb 1916; Marie, b. May 1919.
