No, I'm not direct kin to your group. We might have the same 5th Great or 6th great is likely. I saw your post and I have some census records and found him. Looks like his clan was in Cherokee Co. for years based on the 1860-70 census.

Looks like (needs more details research) but that Earksin dad is John Frank Maples whose parents were John A. Maples and Sarah A. (John born in TN and Sarah born in SC)That Earskin has a aunt called Darcus C.C. Maples and a aunt named Elizabeth.

Going back to 1860 census this John is living next to his father Josiah Maples (Born 1811 TN) and his wife Mary b:SC with children: Joseph R. Maples, b: 1834 / Madison / James / Elijah b:1843 / Mollie.
I don't have the 1850 census which would tell us if he is part of the Maples clan in Bradley/Monroe County TN or the Sevier/Grainger County TN groups. I don't think he's part of the SC Maples clan that is in Mitchell Co., GA. I did do a book on the early Maples history that I have on disk and sale for 30 bucks if your interested. But, its mostly about the Maples from TN which group does come from it looks like with the following census records.

If he's part of the Bradley Co., TN group then he is cousins to all those Maples in Woodbury and is the most likely story. The key is finding the right Josiah (many of them) in the 1850 census when John A. is only a child to connect them correctly. Maybe you can get to a library now and finish the puzzle. They are in TN in the 1850 census most likely since John A. states born in TN in the 1870 census. But either group will take them back to early William, Thomas and Thomas Maples of early Virginia in the early 1700's.

Good luck with your research and it looks like a trip to Cherokee is in your future. Look at the old deeds at the court house for they may say something like I sale this land to my son, etc. Check out the cemeteries in the Mt. Pleasant Community were they lived for years.
