Hope this helps in your research. Edmond Maples born 1786 and married to Elizabeth Hammock (1794-1870's)had many children including Elnathan who went to Missouri and lived in Copper Hill, MO. He had a son named Thomas Robert Maples. Maybe your Robert is Nathan's brother and Elnathan named a child after him. Edmond lived in Grainger County most of his life and later in Union County (next county over) where he died. Just a possible connection. But, it's proven that this Edmond is illegimatie child of Elizabeth Maples. This Elizabeth is the daughter of the old William Maples (brother to Josiah, Sr.).
You only have about 4 choices for your Robert. Josiah Jr., which I doubt. John Maples child which is a long shot as well for his children are older than your Robert. The other is Edmond Barnard Maples (1771 - 1820's) who had 3 children put into the county poor house where James B. Maples got fees from the county for their up keep. I know one them...Thomas went to Arkansas. They were cousins to Elnathan. So good luck. But, this is your only options for sure. Sooner or later they would go on back to the old Thomas and William Maples of NC...then back to Virginia late 1600's as children of Thomas Sr.
