Update on my grandmother, Sophie Markwardt....
Her father came to NYC from Germany before 1880. At that time he had a son, Henry with him. He stayed in NYC for awhile, at least until 1890 or so then moved to NJ.
Since Sophie was born March 18, 1880 she would have been the first generation born in America!
