Markwardt/Markhardt/Marquardt - Thimble Thimble

Can you help?
Researching the Ernest Markhardt family, of White Lake South Dakota. Ernest born 1843, m. Anna Schultz b. 1856, both were original settlers of White Lake. They had five children: Bertha b.1881, Ida b. 1885, Charles b.1886, William b.1887, and Fredrick b.1890. I recently learned that the family changed their name, from Marquardt(Maybe Markwardt) to Markhardt, after having immigrated from the Providence of Saxony Germany, sometime in the 1800's. The family stopped off in Madison Wisconsin, and may be related to the Markhardt families in Wisconsin, although no connection has been made at this time.

If you can assist in making further connections for my family, to the Markhardt, Markwardt, or Marquardt names, or shed further light on this, it would be appreciated. Most of my information is on the South Dakota Markhardts.
