Robert L Marlett (c1846-1878); Maryl E Marlett (1867 -?)

Working through some old family papers, I have come upon a mystery I hope someone can help me with. I have the original military discharge papers of ROBERT L MARLETT who was discharged from Company I, 54th Penna Volunteer Infantry, in December 1863 at Springfield, West Virginia. I also have a diploma for MARY E MARLETT which states in part: "...to certify that Mary E Marlett, daughter of Robert Marlett, who died in the service of his country during the War of the Rebellion, entered the Soldier's Orphan School at McAlisterville ((Juaniata Co., PA)) under the authority of the State April 22, 1878 and left it June 45h, 1883 at the age of sixteen years..."
The 1880 Census shows Mary and three siblings (George, William, and Gertie) in the Orphans School.
The mystery is that we know of NO KNOWN CONNECTION between our family (KLING, SHOOP, SHARRER, MCCAULEY) and Marlett.
Any help with info on this family, what happen to Mary after 1883, etc., deeply appreciated.

Andrew
