My Marlin family came from county Londonderry,Ireland. The Marlin name has several variations.Several of the Marlin families who came from Ireland in the 1800's added a "g" to their name and went by Marling, for what reason I am not sure. The early Marlins were French Huguenots, stonemasons living in France in early 1500's. The religious struggle between Roman Catholics and Protestants was the beginning to the Marlin family's many travels. The Marlins were in England in the mid 1500's. Surrey,Essex,Lancashire,Bedfordshire,Gloucester. The Marlins made their way to Scotland in the 1600's mostly Glascow region. My Marlin ancstors were in Northern Ireland as early as 1682. According to family legend my 6th great grandfather was a staff officer to King William III at the Battle of Boyne. The family was granted land in an Irish township for service to the greatful King. The proof of this military involvement is not yet found. In the 1700's our Marlins were French Huguenot/English/Scot living in Magherafelt Northern Ireland. The family grew flax and made linens. The decline of the linen trade combined with crop failure seen many of the family leave Ireland. I imagine some Marlins made their way to Holland as it was seen as a haven for people seeking religious freedom.
Still looking for more!
