Myrna,
Renee/Angelia Newman and I have exchanged information regarding William Moon Martin 1803-1917.I appreciate all the hard work you and others have done, but I assure you he didn't die until Jan. 1917, in his home at the now extant Cassville (formerly called Cooley Gap) about midway between Fallsville and Edwards Jct. on Hwy 16. He had children with but did not marry Polly Rhodes and I never found a marriage certificate for Nancy C. Cole either but he had four children by her. (1870 Census)Samantha Jane (Martin) was one of them, my husband's GRANDMOTHER. Samantha's brother was James Newton "Gambling Jim" Martin who inherited and his son Virgil Marvin Martin inherited from him.Margie Belle (Brison) married Virgil. In 1989 Margie Belle and I sponsored a Martin Reunion in her home in Newton County, only a few miles from Jim Martin's preserved homestead.I have a cassette tape of what she remembered about the Martin's.She went with me through the Cassville Cemetery. I took a photo of William Martin's tombstone and the lighting was wrong with my camera strap shading the stone in 1989. Someone else took a better photo but it needs a digital photo taken.I have a very good photo of Jim Martin's homestead taken from the highway in 1989.It was located near the Cassville Baptist Church Cemetery. William Moon Martin and Nancy C. Cole lived in their cabin 200 feet behind Jim's homestead, over the hill. But Margie Belle wasn't my only informant.Mrs. Gertie Ricketts and her sister,Jewel (Holland) Epperson of near Red Star, Madison Co, AR (only a few miles from Fallsville), kept up with Samantha Jane and her husband, John Wesley Clark and their family. And others kept up with her sister, Dorothy Loutisha/Lutisha "Tishie" (Martin), see her photo and other info findagrave, Tishie Adams, Lawton, OK. In addition Rev. John Martin recently lost his wife (Maggie (Davis) Martin. She is buried in Franklin Co, AR. His father Claudie CHESTER Martin (wife Easter), lived there and in Johnson Co, AR too.John gave me much info. His sister Pearlie Martin Bowen gave me a print of her photo of him.Check the land records for W. M. Martin, Newton Co, AR, 1905.W. M. Martin was very much alive then, and in the 1900 census and in the 1910 census too and Nancy in the hh of her son Jim Martin in 1920 (all Newton Co, AR). When I thought back on what proof besides the census I had for the missing Census' between 1870 and 1900(none taken in that part of the National Forest in 1800)I do have proof through William M. Martin's daughter (mother Mary Polly Rhodes), Susan Caroline "Carrie" Martin, that he gave away because his wife Nancy C. Cole was so mean to her.I have the story from Margie Belle Martin recorded on tape. Susan Caroline Martin was only a girl and she had lived in Newton County all her life. She could remember Jasper was the county seat. Carrie's sons went to Jasper in Newton County). The Sheriff directed them to Jim Martin's home at Cassville. For years after that the Moon's visited them and also another grandson of Jim Martin's home, Ervin (now dec'd) but a daughter of Ervin's was living at London in 1989 and she gave me information too.Apparently William Moon Martin washed his hands of his family with Levina Sherrill when he left. I never dreamed he was in Washington Co, AR until I looked into his Franklin Co, AR holdings. Have you ever looked into Judge Isaac Parker's index of those he had in his court? They used alias' all the time and if it wasn't so expensive for all those copies to get the right John Wesley Clark who we know was an outlaw, I would just copy them all. He died 1898-1900He was an outlaw in east Oklahoma, had a large farm near Fort Smith thatSamantha was cheated out, of when he died and in looking for a Clark with a large farm, I ran across W. M. Martin in Franklin Co, AR recently before I even knew there was a William Moon Martin. However the 1840 and 1850 Census do prove he wasn't born in 1799. In 1917 he died and Jim Martin was probably who erected his marker, age 114 which corresponds with what is on his gravestone (1850 Census). I think he probably had an even earlier marriage (and children) than with Levina Sherrill due to his age but Margie Belle said he only married twice and Polly Rhodes wasn't one of the marriages. Angelina Newman said nothing about William Moon Martin's PROBATE file being found in Franklin County, Arkansas. The Sutton's debts were backed up by William Moon Martin and it was for,one from a Martin in Alabama, so William Moon Martin was liable for what they owed. William Moon Martin was in the north part of Arkansas 1860 and 1870. Take a look at all the lawsuits going on!I don't know if that was why he disappeared but that apparently was what he did - leave, showing up in Fulton County. When I looked into Missouri land records I found some in Polk Co, MO for W. M. Martin, swamp lands like he had in Franklin County. And a ferry in Franklin County. He had a ferry at Calico Rock, AR too on White River. I am very convinced he was the very same William M. Martin born 1803-but as in all my research, I continue to gather what I can. Nothing in genealogy is for certain until proven so. Mildred Clark
