Hi Duke, nice to hear from you. There were several Elijahs in the Martindale family and I want to get focused on the one you mean. Is this the one?:
84 ELIJAH MILES (4) MARTINDALE (Miles (3) William (2) John (1)), b. in Marion county, Ind., 26 May 1828; m. Julia Anne Coons 20 July 1838.She was b. 26 June 1831.They lived first near Fairfield, in southern Jefferson county, Iowa. During the California gold rush they went to that state and it is thought they drove oxen.A young daughter d. in Calif.Returning to Ill., they lived for a time at Slabtown, Fulton county, on a farm one-quarter miles west of the Howard church.Elijah was shot by a man named Grubb near Smithfield, Ill., 18 Dec. 1864.He was a man of great physical strength. His wife d. 6 July 1912.Both are buried at in the Howard churchyard south of Smithfield, Ill.
Children:
Mary Elizabeth, b. about 1853; m. Azar Huffman and lived at Shannon city, Union county, Iowa.
David Miles, b. at Slabtown, Ill., 3 Feb 1855.He lived at Burmadott, Ill.
Jane, b. 19 Aug. prior to 1960.She m. Jim Weaver and lived at Diagonal, Iowa.
Martin Douglas, b. at Slabtown, Ill., 19 Aug 1860.He lived at Smithfield.
Susan, m. Albert Crabb and lived at Tampico, Ill.
Melissa, m. George Douglas. She was red-headed and very pretty.
Amina, m. John Moore and lived at Marietta, Ill.She was the youngest.
(This is from "John Martindell, Cordwainer" by the Rev. Harry H. Martindale, edited and arranged by Marjorie Seward Cleveland and Charles Harvey Roe)
It looks like this was his line:
John the Cordwainer/The Immigrant

William* - see below
|
Miles
|
Elijah Miles
Is that consistent with your records (assuming I have the right guy)?
Some of the other Elijahs were these ...
John the Cordwainer/The Immigrant

William* - see below

William

John

Elder Elijah Martindale, the Disciples of Christ preacher. Sometimes, he is given the middle initial "B" -- I suppose for "Bishop" but I'm not sure about this.
|
Judge Elijah B. Martindale, he really wasn't a judge, but was a lawyer and businessman and people called him judge.
|
Col Elijah B. Martindale, who the other post you saw was about.
I can't remember just now if the "B's" in the younger Elijahs' names were for Bishop or Boyd or one of each.
*William. Now, I think you wrote that William Martindale (the son of the Immigrant and the grandfather of your Elijah M. Martindale) was married three times. I don't know about that. The Martindell book shows only two marriages; if I have ever heard of a first wife who had no children, I've forgotten about her. Would you please tell me more about her? This is William's story from the Martindell book:
3 WILLIAM (2) MARTINDALE (John (1)), b. 30 Aug. 1723 in Philadelphia; m. (1) Martha -------- (Merrick) about 1750.He was a Quaker and lived in Bucks county, Pa., until about 1767 in which year he acquired land in Loudoun County, VA.Later the family, with other Quakers, migrated to what is now Union county, S. C., settling on the Enoree River. His house was burned, with all his papers, in 1791.His wife died prior to 1790 and he m. (2) Elizabeth Whitley who was described as being considerably younger than he, (she was probably about 35) very industrious, and of German or Dutch extraction. She d. 28 Aug 1824, probably in Marion county, Ind.He d. 15 July 1808 in Union county, S. C.
Children of first marriage, all b. in Bucks county, Pa.:’
15 James, b. about 1751.
16 William, b. 8 March 1753.
17 John, b. about 1755.
18 Joseph.
19 Thomas.
Martha (?), m. David (?) Norman.
Daughter, m. Jesse (?) Young.
Daughter, m. Daniel (?) Young.
Children of second marriage, all b. in S. C.:
20 Martin, b. 27 Dec. 1791.
21 Miles, b. about 1794.
22 David,b. 1 April 1798.
Does any of this make sense?
Ned
