This sounds like the history of my husband's family in the U.S. I remember some of the details slightly differently, for example that the original Martinie was French and deserted from the French-Indian war because he didn't like shooting at fellow-Frenchmen. I forget who we got the original history from. My husband, William Martinie is from Tolono Illinois (near Champaign-Urbana)and many of his relations still live near there.
