Have you tried the 1891 England census for possible parents. I couldn't see a suitable Martyr for father, but there is a suspect Evelyn Kennedy, then 16. It's a free basic version of the census at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/
There's an Edwin James Martyr, died Mar qtr 1899 aged 42, The Strand, who sure looks likely (FreeBMD).
