Hi Barbara--
You ask a good question. I don't know who John Thomas Monfort is.
Hardin Masden's wife is Charlotte Milton/Melton, and I suspect Jane Milton in that 1870 household is her mother. In 1880, the widowed Charlotte is living with her nephew, William Milton, in Mackville, Washington Co., Kentucky. The household also includes other relatives, including Lucy Milton, his mother.
I don't have any Monforts in my database. None of Hardin Masden's sisters married a Monfort that I'm aware of. See http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lvixie&id=I2403http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lvixie&id=I2403 for the family Hardin came from.
John Thomas Montfort is only 3 and his father is 39 in 1870. Hardin Masden is 56. He had a son, James H. Masden, who was killed in the Civil War. Hardin did not have children with his second wife, Charlotte. Why did they have this child in their home when he had a father and stepmother who he also is enumerated with? There's some connection. Is this childless couple taking in a child that needs care? Hardin seems old enough to be the child's grandfather, so it's possible one of his nieces married a Montfort.
John Thomas Montfort was born about 1866-67. The mother was probably a minimum of 16-18 when he was born, which would put her birth at least at no later than 1851, and probably earlier, like 1848. The father was born ca. 1831.
There are a number of Masden nieces I haven't traced, who may match the parameters: Mary E. Hamilton, b. 1839-40; Ellen E. Masden, b. 1843; Elizabeth Huff, b. 1843; Sarah Jane Huff, b. 1851. I haven't traced any of them forward or know where they may or may not be in 1870.
The other possibility is that John Thomas's mother was a relative of Charlotte Milton.
What do you think? Keep us posted with your search.
