I have recently come to believe that my ancestor, Susan Mason, was from Tipperary. She married James Stanford who was from Co.Laois. I recently got a lead that he was probably from Kyle,Laois..which is next to (and a part of in some instances) Roscrea, Tipperary. The only Masons in Laois were very far from Kyle, however Griffiths shows a Mason family in Ballyduff, Tipperary. I have since found records of other Masons in the area.
I will be ordering the parish records from the LDS this week. Hope to have more promising info. I've had no luck with this family for quite awhile.
Susan Mason and James Stanford had atleast three children: Peter b.c.1830, Edward James b.c.1834 and a daughter. I think the entire family emigrated to the US in the 1850's. My ancestor, Edward J., was a miner in Virginia for a short while and enlisted in the Union Army there. After the Civil War he settled in New Haven, CT. At that point his brother and probably sister ( I don't know surname of her husband for sure) were in New Haven. As was his mother. She is buried in his family plot. While a James Stanford, grocer (which Edward was later), was listed in City Directories in late 1850's and early 1860's.. I don't have a death or burial for him anywhere in New Haven.
The only clue I had to location in Ireland at this point was Edward J's Civil War records listed Laois as county of birth. Recently Griffiths has shown only ONE Stanford family in Laois..leading me to paths I will research now.
Let me know if you find any connections to Susan and her family.
