Hi John
If this is Acadia University Wolfville N.Scotia then the book is most likely about the Masons of this province. One lot in Guysborough County up towards Cape Breton are descended from an Anglo Irish gentleman from the Wexford area of southern Ireland. Then, there are the ones down near Chester on the South Shore. I do not know where they originate from.
Let me know if there appears to be a connection to the Staffs bunch.
I did find a reference in one of Thomas Pape's books on Medieval History of N-u-l to a Thomas Maceon being hauled up before the Penkhull Manorial Court in, I think, 1132 for getting into a fight with one William atte Bowes.Thomas was fined 6d and William somewhat less. However, it does not seem to have been a very common name in those parts.
According to a label on a key chain with the Mason coat of arms, Mason probably was brought to England by Thomas de Maceon who was one of William the Conquerors knights.
This may not be a terribly reliable source of imformation but it is all I have come across so far!
