We need a representative of this family to do a DNA test. Some financial help if your lineage fits.

There are three Mason families in Stafford VA late 1600s/early 1700s:

1. George Mason I & II of Stafford, who moved to Dogue's Neck in Fairfax (and later became the Gunston Hall line)in the 1690s.

2. John Mason b. Stafford 1722--father probably the William who owned 100 acres next to the Hope Patent south of Aquia Creek which he inherited from his stepfather, W. W. Matheny, 1705.

DNA tests indicate these two Mason families are not related, but we need a DNA test for the 3rd group.

3. George of Aquia who lived next to Butlers and near William Mason on Aquia Creek in Stafford died 1711, leaving a will. His son George II married Anaple Wigginton, and they moved ca. 1727 to Prince William Co. where George died ca, 1729. Anaple then married William Butler. George I of Aquia also had a son William who died in Stafford in 1733, leaving only two daughters.

George II of Aquia and Anaple Wigginton were the parents of Benjamin Mason of Loudoun Co. VA, father of Burgess Mason who moved to Kentucky. Burgess's son Benjamin Stark Mason of Hickman Co. KY had several sons, and it is this line which presents the best opportunity for the DNA sample we need to answer the question, was that group of Masons related to either of the other two?

For additional information on the Mason DNA project and results see http://www.ncroots.com/DNA-Mason-Worldwide/.

So far, there have been no DNA matches to the Gunston Hall Masons. There are nine matches to the John Mason line in Stafford, but we have no idea how some of them are related. It's time to compare the Aquia line to the other two. If several descendants of Burgess Mason share part of the cost of the DNA test along with several others of us descended from Stafford Masons, it won't be an onerous fee for anyone.
