Hi.Do you have the Mast Family History book by CZ Mast?On page 671 and 672 it mentions the Masts that went to Texas. In particular there is a reference to African-American slaves that took the Mast name. They were owned by Reuben Mast (b. 4/27/1794) and his second wife Jane. The moved from Valle Crucis, NC on 1/12/1850 with their children, and "a family of negroes belonging to Reuben Mast, whose names were 'Aunt'Mary, Jake, Irvin, John, Hen, Joe and Mat."It says they travelled by 4 wagons and a surrrey, crossing the Watauga R. on ice, and arrived at Melrose, TX on March 12, 1859.After living with Jacob Mast for a year, they finally settled 9 miles north of Melrose.Prior to Reuben's death in 1862, he travelled back to NC to "settle up an estate" and bought "$5,000.00 worth of slaves (Charley and his family, who, when freed a few years later, took the name of Mast.)"Hope this helps.Barbara
